Wijaya Kumaratunga Memorial Hospital established in 1999 by the then president her Excellency Chandrika Bandaranayake Kumaratunga in memory of her late husband, great humorist Wijaya Kumaratunga. This hospital was started as a small peripheral unit of the standard of a small dispensary with one doctor and few paramedics. From then onwards we are in a continuous progression of upgrading the services with paralleled expansion of facilities which has taken and a vertical up rise to date.
From the very inception we were blessed with adequate land for further expansion which is no doubt one of the main contributing factors to our achievements. Subsequently we were able to get portion of land adjoining Ceylon Agro (pvt) Ltd as a donation.
Today we can be proud of not only as an outpatient Treatment unit, but also a well established ophthalmic hospital catering to 100s of cataract surgeries daily and also the services of a resident physician and a resident general surgeon , A Dental unit , Wound Care unit and Operation Theatre and many clinics to health related matters.
The above has been made easy by expanding of the infrastructure from a two roomed building at the inception to several building including one of three storied building with the capacity of holding approximately given above 400 patients at any given time. Simultaneously the increase of the work force from about 25 person to 200 including 23 doctors, 63 Nursing Officers, 12 Paramedics. Furthermore we are on the verge of laying foundation stone for the next seven storied building to be erected in near future.
I salute all employees small and big as they all work with zeal and dedication with untiring effort and a positive attitude to meet the demand of daily influx of patient.
The chairman Prof. Carlo Fonseka who is the founder chairman and the chairman today is the live wire not only within but also outside sources such as Ministry of Health and government authorities etc. His exemplary attitude enthusiasm and encouragement has kept everybody moving in the right direction.
It is my earnest wish and prayer that Wijaya Kumaratunga Memorial Hospital will gather momentum and glow from strength to strength in the coming years to be a model hospital in Sri Lanka.
